As a parent or caregiver to someone facing a language or communication barrier, it can be incredibly difficult to understand how that person interprets the world around them. Audio and language cues that seem familiar to many people, can be completely foreign and unintelligible to a person with a language or speech disability.
The following article is a first-person account of living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The article’s author, Catlaina Vrana finally began to make sense of the world around her by using an augmentative and alternative communication, or AAC. Her AAC device allow her to finally fully communicate.
She reflects on her journey from a childhood where the sounds around her made no sense, how she misunderstood how words and phrases worked together, making speech impossible for her, until she discovered the AAC device that open up the world to her.
