Congress Extends Medicare Telehealth Waivers Through December 2027

by | Feb 13, 2026

Congress passed a new legislative package on February 3 that extends Medicare telehealth waivers through the end of 2027, allowing occupational therapy practitioners to keep providing services remotely after a brief lapse caused by budget negotiations and a partial government shutdown. The two-year extension builds on the bipartisan Telehealth Modernization Act and continues policies first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The American Occupational Therapy Association and its partners pushed to make sure occupational therapy remained included, and the organization hopes Congress will use this extra time to create permanent telehealth policies so providers and patients don’t face future disruptions. More updates are expected once CMS releases additional guidance.
