May Is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month—Easy Ways to Get Involved

by | May 2, 2025

May marks National Speech-Language-Hearing Month (NSLHM), a time to raise public awareness about communication disorders and highlight the critical roles of audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs). This year’s observance is especially meaningful as it coincides with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) 2025 Centennial. The month begins by celebrating strong advocacy efforts through ASHA’s Take Action platform and continues with a national media tour on May 1, where ASHA leaders will share insights from a new caregiver-focused poll. The findings show that care from audiologists and SLPs is highly valued, reinforcing the importance of these professions not only for those with communication disorders, but also for their caregivers and families.

Throughout May, ASHA will release new educational materials covering key topics like communication milestones, literacy in school-aged children, hearing protection, and reducing stigma associated with communication disorders. Members are encouraged to participate in NSLHM by using ASHA’s customizable outreach tools, engaging in the “Speaking Up For Communication” social media contest, and showing their support through digital and printed materials. With widespread participation, ASHA aims to make a lasting impact on public understanding and appreciation of the professions. More information and resources can be found at asha.org/nslhm.
